She basically belongs to Assam. Kalpana took her singing lessons from Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan but the bard of Brahmaputra Bhupen Hazarika influenced her. She was also the candidate of reality show Junoon- Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka in the year 2008 telecast on NDTV Imagine.
Kalpana is graduated in English literature from Cotton College, Assam. Also, She got training of music from Sangeet Visharad in Indian Classical Music in Lucknow.
